At Advanced Orthopaedics Associates, P.A., our standout team of board-certified and fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeons ensures you get exemplary care throughout your surgery and recovery. One way we help you have the best experience is providing detailed post-surgery recommendations. Read on to get answers to some of the most common questions our patients ask after hip replacement.
How do I prepare my home for post-surgery recovery?
Create a safe and accessible space before your hip replacement surgery. Clear clutter and secure rugs or cords to prevent falls. If you have a multilevel home and your bedroom is upstairs, set up a sleeping area on the first floor. Place frequently used items like toiletries, medications, phone chargers, and remotes within easy reach. A raised toilet seat and shower chair are helpful, especially in early recovery. You’ll also need an assistive device, like a walker, as you transition into walking again.Â
How do I sleep comfortably after hip surgery?
In the first weeks after surgery, sleep on your back with a pillow between your knees. Some people prefer lying on the non-surgical side, again with a pillow for support. Avoid crossing your legs or moving in a way that twists your hip. Use firm pillows to keep your body in the right position. A wedge pillow or adjustable bed can also help align your hip and reduce discomfort.Â
Can I return to sports or exercise after a hip replacement?
Yes, most people return to physical activity once fully healed. Low-impact activities like walking, biking, swimming, and golf are usually safe and encouraged. High-impact sports or activities involving twisting or jumping may not be recommended. Our surgeons provide personalized recommendations with a gradual return to normal activities. Physical therapy is a crucial part of this.
What follow-ups do I need after hip replacement?
You’ll have your first follow-up visit within a few weeks of surgery to check the incision and healing progress. Later visits will assess joint function and range of motion. You may need X-rays to ensure the implant is in the right position. These appointments are important to make sure your recovery is on track.
